Harlowton, MT

Harlowton is Wheatland County's seat in central Montana, a city built around the railroad's decision to put a major division point in the Upper Musselshell Valley. The town began as a station on the Montana Railroad in 1900, moved from the nearby stage stop of Merino toward the tracks, and took its name from railroad president Richard Harlow. The Milwaukee Road arrived in 1908 and changed Harlowton's scale: homesteader trains came through, agricultural settlement spread across the county, and railway work crews gave the city its largest employer.

For much of the twentieth century, Harlowton was the eastern end of the Milwaukee Road's electrified line over the Rocky Mountains. Electric locomotives headed west toward Avery, Idaho, while steam and later diesel engines handled the eastern run; the 438-mile electrified stretch operated from 1916 to 1974. The Harlowton Milwaukee Depot Museum occupies the 1908 passenger depot, and the Upper Musselshell Museum adds railroad models, local ranching history, Indigenous collections, and Avaceratops "Ava" from nearby Shawmut. Harlowton's current map still connects county government, wheat and livestock country, the Musselshell River, and one of Montana's clearest railroad legacies.
