Harmony, PA

Harmony is a Butler County borough in the Connoquenessing Creek valley, about 30 miles north of Pittsburgh. The 2020 census counted 942 residents. George Washington and Christopher Gist passed through in 1753 along Native trails, and the town's central history begins with Johann Georg Rapp and the Harmony Society. The Harmonists arrived in 1804-05, pooled property, and built a communal settlement with a church, school, mills, brewery, tannery, and more than 100 buildings.

When the Harmonists left for Indiana in 1814, Mennonite families led by Abraham Ziegler resettled the place and kept the town going. Harmony Museum now preserves that layered history through the 1809 main museum, Harmonist-Ziegler Barn, Harmonist cemetery, 1825 Mennonite Meetinghouse, and displays on Washington's mission, Harmonists, Mennonites, and local gunsmithing. Connoquenessing Creek forms the town's geographic spine, and the historic district follows streets built around the old communal settlement. Harmony is one of those Butler County boroughs where a short walk through town brings several different chapters into the same block.
