About Harrisburg
Harrisburg occupies the Cabarrus County side of the Charlotte metropolitan boundary, adjoining Charlotte and Mecklenburg County to the west and Concord to the north. The town incorporated in 1973, and North Carolina Highway 49 remains its main route toward both larger cities. Population increased from 18,967 in the 2020 census to an estimated 20,742 in July 2025, 9.1 percent above the revised 2020 estimate base. The 2020-through-2024 housing profile was dominated by ownership: 92 percent of occupied homes were owner-occupied, the median owner-occupied value was $478,000, and monthly costs for owners with a mortgage were $2,216. Median gross rent was $2,640. During the same period, 22 percent of residents age five or older spoke a language other than English at home, and workers averaged about 30 minutes of travel to work. The 64-acre Harrisburg Park concentrates many of the town's organized activities. It combines five multipurpose fields, a paved walking track, mountain-bike trail, bicycle pump track, playground, splash pad, picnic shelters, and an amphitheater with the Harrisburg branch of the Cabarrus County Public Library on the same grounds.
A walking-and-biking path connects the complex to Harris Depot Park. The amphitheater hosts the town's Rockin' the Burg concerts as well as the Multicultural Festival and Christmas Tree Lighting, while sports seasons give town programs priority on fields and some shelters. Pharr Mill Park provides a different kind of outing: its boardwalk and walking-and-biking trails reach the Rocky River and connect with the Carolina Thread Trail, and its grounds include natural areas, a fishing pond, picnic sites, volleyball courts, and a playground. The town operates that park in partnership with Cabarrus County. Together, the two parks distribute athletic programs, large public events, library visits, and river access across complementary town facilities.
