Harrison, IL

Harrison is a small census-designated place in Somerset Township, Jackson County, southern Illinois, west of Carbondale and near Murphysboro. It sits in country shaped by farm fields, wooded ridges, county roads, and the old coal-and-timber economy. The 2020 census counted 895 residents. County records still refer to Harrison Road, while the Illinois State Archives lists Somerset among Jackson County’s townships; local roads and drainage are managed through a patchwork of county and township responsibilities.

Life here is organized through larger places: Somerset Township road maintenance, Jackson County services, Murphysboro’s stores and schools, and the wider Southern Illinois network around Carbondale. Lake Murphysboro State Park lies in the township, adding a nearby place for camping, fishing, trails, and lake days.
