About Hartford
Hartford is Ohio County’s home rule-class city and county seat, built around the Rough River at the head of navigation. Settlers established Fort Hartford in the early 1780s, and the town incorporated in 1808; the Louisville & Nashville Railroad reached Hartford in 1909. Today the courthouse square and nearby Main, East Union, and East Washington streets form the Downtown Hartford Historic District, with the courthouse, jail, city hall, and older storefronts still shaping the center. The Ohio County Public Library adds a present-day civic stop, while the Rough River bridge keeps the city’s first geography in the name. Hartford is a Kentucky county seat whose map still joins fort, river, courthouse, and rail line.
