Hartland, MI

Hartland is a small Livingston County community whose name covers a census-designated place, the historic village inside Hartland Township, and the wider area around it. U.S. 23 forms the CDP’s western edge, with Flint and Ann Arbor about 27 miles away in opposite directions. The village’s distinctive history came through J. Robert Crouse, who returned to his hometown and built a rural cultural program around the Cromaine Library, Hartland Music Hall, crafts, schools, and recreation. The 1858 Congregational church became the Music Hall in 1929; Cromaine Library was built in 1927.

That old civic experiment still shows up in ordinary places. Cromaine’s local-history collection keeps Community Life issues from 1933 onward, and the Music Hall hosts plays, concerts, lectures, school events, and the annual Messiah. Hartland’s older working story is hand weaving: Cromaine Crafts opened in an old mill in 1934 and at its height supplied 200 retail stores. The township, library, schools, and chamber now share a Hartland Living network, so the CDP is easiest to understand as a village-centered community whose cultural institutions grew out of a once-rural landscape.
