Hartley, IA

Hartley is an O'Brien County city that got its start when the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Railway crossed this part of northwest Iowa around 1880. The town was named for railroad official John Hartley, and U.S. 18 still carries the old through-town role. The railroad brought the first layout; agriculture built the long-term base, with fields, grain work, and local services filling in around the central streets.

Today Hartley has the practical pieces of a regional farm town: city hall, library, fire and ambulance services, municipal pool, industrial park, and the Hartley–Melvin–Sanborn school district. Those services keep everyday errands close to the center, even as the industrial park and farm roads push outward. Meadowbrook Golf and Country Club sits three and a half miles south, and Summerfest takes over the calendar on the first weekend in August. Hartley is small, but the local map is easy to read—railroad origin, farm economy, school district, and a summer event that brings people back to the center.
