Hartman, AR

Hartman is a Johnson County city on U.S. 64, about four miles north of the Arkansas River and between Clarksville and Ozark. Its early settlement grew around Horsehead Creek, and the town's central road once carried through traffic across the county. The 2020 census counted 516 residents. The old highway route now has a different role because Interstate 40 carries most long-distance traffic, leaving Hartman connected to the regional road system without serving as the main east-west route.

Hartman's civic history is tied to school and church life. Sacred Heart Church was established in 1882, and local school arrangements once supported a Hartman district that absorbed surrounding rural areas. Today Westside School District serves the city, with older students traveling through the district's wider network. The city's location keeps Clarksville close for county-seat business and larger errands, yet Hartman retains its own municipal center and the landmarks of a former highway town. Horsehead Creek, U.S. 64, the Arkansas River corridor, and the school district give the town its shape: it is a small community built at the meeting point of rural roads, river country, and a route whose traffic pattern changed when I-40 arrived.
