Harvey, LA

Harvey is an unincorporated community on the New Orleans West Bank, sitting directly across the Mississippi River between Gretna and Marrero. Built around the historic Harvey Canal, the area grew from an industrial shipping corridor into a handy suburban base for commuters and families. The canal is still an active working waterway lined with marine businesses and warehouses, while the elevated Westbank Expressway and the Harvey Tunnel keep traffic moving through town. Neighborhoods extend south from the expressway toward Woodmere, offering a mix of established residential streets, convenient shopping, and quick access to downtown New Orleans.

Like much of Jefferson Parish, the area is low and flat, relying on canals and parish pump stations during heavy downpours. You will want to look up each property's flood zone, review any elevation certificates, and gather home and flood insurance quotes early in the process. Neighborhood feel also varies from one street to the next. Quiet subdivisions tucked away from main roads offer plenty of calm, but blocks near the canal or major thoroughfares can see more commercial and truck traffic, so visiting at different times of day is always smart.

Getting into downtown New Orleans is usually a quick drive across the Crescent City Connection, though rush hour on the bridge and the expressway can slow things down. Most people need a car for daily errands, but the central location makes it easy to get around the entire West Bank.
