Harveysburg, OH

Harveysburg is a Warren County village founded by Quaker merchant William Harvey in 1829 and incorporated in 1844. Harvey laid out 47 lots on land that had passed through a Revolutionary War grant, and the village soon had mills, shops, a bank, a blacksmith, and a post office. Elizabeth and Jesse Harvey established the Harveysburg Free Black School in 1831, making it the first free school for African American children in Ohio. The restored schoolhouse now serves as the headquarters of the Harveysburg Community Historical Society.

Caesar Creek Lake lies along the village's eastern side, bringing boating, fishing, camping, and park roads into the local landscape. The Ohio Renaissance Festival's nearby grounds add a large seasonal event to a village whose older map is still visible in its brick school, cemetery, churches, and Main Street lots. Massie Township and Warren County provide the wider civic framework, while Waynesville, Lebanon, and Wilmington supply larger shopping and services. Harveysburg's story runs from Quaker settlement to freedom-through-education landmark to a modern festival crossroads.
