Haskell, TX

Willow Pond Springs gave central Texas a watering place used by Indigenous travelers, explorers, and buffalo hunters; Haskell grew around it into the county seat. Thomas F. Tucker settled there in 1879 after his brother's account of the region, first calling the place Rice Springs. When the county was organized in 1885, Haskell became the seat of government and the community took its present name. U.S. 277 runs along the eastern side of town, while U.S. 380 crosses the center, pointing toward Wichita Falls, Abilene, Denton, and Post. Haskell Consolidated Independent School District keeps local education in town. The courthouse role, the two highways, and the old spring site still locate the city on the West Texas map. From the road, Haskell reads as an old watering place turned county seat and school town.
