Hatch, NM

Hatch is a Doña Ana County village about 37 miles northwest of Las Cruces, just off Interstate 25. The 2020 census counted 1,539 residents. New Mexico chile gives the place its working identity: fields and roadside chile businesses sit beside the highway routes, and the village holds its Chile Festival each Labor Day weekend at the Village of Hatch Airport on Highway 26. Hatch Valley Public Schools and a cluster of village parks keep everyday institutions close to the same road map. Hatch Valley Community Park and Frank Hinojos Ballpark sit at Highway 26 and Apajo Way, while Veterans Park, a swimming pool, courts, and a small museum park fill out the recreation system.

The settlement began in 1851, when New Mexican farmers established a community along the road between the Jornada del Muerto and Cooke's Wagon Road. Apache raids drove the early settlement away; Fort Thorn was built in 1853 to protect the area, and families returned. Hatch incorporated in 1928. Today, Interstate 25, Highway 26, the school district, farm country, and the festival grounds put the village on a larger southern New Mexico map, while the chile harvest remains the detail locals use first when placing Hatch.
