Hatley, MS

Hatley is a Monroe County town about four miles east of Amory, Mississippi, on a ridge whose streams drain north and south toward the Tombigbee River. The 2020 census counted 495 residents. When the town formed on Tubb family land, it was known as Tubb’s Crossroads. A later group of Seventh-day Adventists became active in local government and renamed the place Hatley in honor of a minister from the church they had left. That unusual name change remains the town’s clearest historical turn.

Hatley’s streets sit between Burketts Creek, Turner Branch, and Weaver Creek, with the surrounding land flowing toward the larger Tombigbee basin. Monroe County School District serves local students, while Amory supplies a nearby commercial and employment center. The town’s small size makes the ridge and drainage pattern easy to feel: the land rises through town, then drops toward separate creek systems on either side. Hatley is a compact northeastern Mississippi community with a church-history origin, a strong crossroads name, and a landscape tied to the river country west of town.
