Haynesville, LA

Haynesville is a town in northern Claiborne Parish just south of the Arkansas border. The 2020 census counted 2,039 residents in the town. Its name became attached to the Haynesville Shale, a Jurassic formation named for the town and now part of the region's energy history. Oil discoveries in the early twentieth century brought new schools, churches, water works, residences, stores, hotels, and warehouses to the parish. The boom left a lasting connection between Haynesville's name and the industrial geography beneath northern Louisiana.

Current local services are organized through Claiborne Parish. Haynesville Elementary and Haynesville Junior/Senior High operate within the parish school system, and the Joe W. Webb Memorial Library has served as the Haynesville branch since 1951. The regional Herbert S. Ford Memorial Museum in nearby Homer preserves exhibits on the parish's oil, railroad, agricultural, and educational history. Haynesville's present-day setting therefore links a town on the Arkansas edge to countywide institutions and an energy story that reaches beyond its streets.
