Hazel Green, KY

Hazel Green is a Wolfe County CDP along the Red River, about seven miles north of Campton. Its post office opened in 1829, the spelling became Hazel Green in 1889, and incorporation in 1856 was later dissolved. Hazel Green Academy, founded in 1880, served mountain students until 1983 and made the settlement an educational center far beyond its size. Nearby Swango Springs once supported resort hotels and commercial mineral-water bottling through 1943. The community’s history is written through a river road, a school campus, and a spring that drew visitors.
