Helena, OK

Helena is an Alfalfa County town of 1,537 residents in the 2020 census, set at the junction of State Highways 45 and 58 about 16 miles southeast of Cherokee. Its postal story began when Monroe received a Helena designation and became the first postmaster, giving the town its name. Helena stayed on the Burlington Northern Santa Fe rail line while other county towns lost service, and the tracks still help place it within the northwestern Oklahoma landscape.

Two institutions give Helena a broad regional role. The James Crabtree Correctional Center occupies a complex first established in 1904 for agricultural education, later used as an orphanage and state school. Timberlake Schools places its high school and elementary school in Helena for students from Goltry, Jet, Nash, and Nescutunga. Add the local oil field, farmers' elevator, State Highway 58, and the wide service area around the schools, and Helena becomes a small town with a surprisingly broad working map across the county.
