Herriman, UT

Herriman has experienced one of the most dramatic growth spurts in the entire Salt Lake Valley. Around the turn of the millennium, it was a quiet farming community with barely 1,500 residents. Today, it is home to over 55,000 people and continues to expand across the southwestern foothills. Much of the city is filled with fresh master-planned neighborhoods, offering a mix of spacious single-family homes, modern townhouses, and new apartment communities. While city road projects are still working to catch up with the rapid expansion, newcomers are drawn by the clean suburban feel, mountain views, and quiet neighborhoods.

Even with all the new construction, Herriman still holds onto pieces of its frontier roots. The area was first settled in the 1850s around Butterfield Canyon, where early pioneers established homesteads and built an adobe fort. If you drive toward the southern end of town, the newer subdivisions give way to wider lots, horse properties, and rugged mountain access. Butterfield Canyon itself remains a favorite spot for scenic drives, trail running, and mountain biking during the warmer months, offering quick outdoor recreation right up the road.

Daily community activity centers around the civic campus at Crane Park on the north side of town. It acts as a gathering hub, bringing together City Hall, the local county library, and the massive J.L. Sorenson Recreation Center. In the summer, kids play in the park splash pad, which freezes into a popular outdoor ice-skating ribbon during the winter. Locals head to the plaza on Monday evenings for Hungry Herriman food truck nights, while annual traditions like the Fort Herriman PRCA Rodeo and Towne Days draw big crowds for parades and festivities.

Shopping and dining are spread throughout several retail plazas across the city, making it easy to grab groceries or visit local restaurants close to home. Families also appreciate having higher-education options right inside city limits. On the southwest side of town, Salt Lake Community College and the University of Utah share a campus at the Juniper Building. The facility allows students to complete associate degrees and transition directly into select bachelor's programs without making the daily drive into Salt Lake City.
