Hesperia, MI

Hesperia is a village split between Newfield Township in Oceana County and Denver Township in Newaygo County, positioned along the White River. It is also the only village in Newaygo County. Booth Perry settled in the area in 1856, and Daniel Weaver and John Cook platted the village in 1866 after building a sawmill and general store. Hesperia became an incorporated village in 1883. The river, millpond, and county line still define the town's shape, while roads connect it with the farms, lakes, and small communities of western Michigan.

The Hesperia Area Chamber points visitors toward a very local set of routines: Main Street shops, a riverside boardwalk, fish watching beside the dam, swimming in the Millpond, and paths out onto the islands. The White River is known for salmon and rainbow trout fishing, and the surrounding lakes bring canoeing, kayaking, hunting, snowmobiling, and ice fishing through the seasons. Hesperia's school, shops, river access, and older mill landscape fit together without much fuss. It is a village where the best map is drawn by water: the White River through town, the millpond at the center, and the lakes and woods stretching out beyond it.
