Hiawatha, KS

Tucked into northeast Kansas where Highway 36 meets Highway 73, Hiawatha is a welcoming county seat of about 3,300 people. The heart of town centers around a handsome courthouse square, shaded by mature maple trees and anchored by an 1891 clock tower. Finding your way around is part of the local charm: the main east-west route, Oregon Street, pays tribute to the historic Oregon Trail, while surrounding streets carry the names of Indigenous nations from the area. With its quiet residential blocks and well-preserved older homes, it offers an easy, classic Midwestern feel.

Community life here revolves around long-standing local traditions. Every autumn since 1914, the town hosts its annual Halloween parade, recognized as one of the oldest in the nation. It is also home to the Davis Memorial at Mount Hope Cemetery, an elaborate collection of life-size marble statues from the 1930s that draws curious visitors from all over.
