Hiawatha, KS

Hiawatha is Brown County's seat and largest city in northeast Kansas, where U.S. 36 and K-73 meet. The 2020 census counted 3,280 residents. The street grid is unusually readable once you know the story: Oregon Street runs east-west in honor of the Oregon Trail, and streets north and south of it carry names tied to Indigenous nations on either side of the trail. The courthouse square, Old Town Clock from 1891, maple-lined streets, and older homes give the center a strong civic pattern without needing a lot of explanation. The Davis Memorial at Mount Hope Cemetery contains life-size marble figures of John and Sarah Davis, built in the 1930s, and the city's Halloween celebration has run continuously since 1914. Hiawatha USD 415, Brown County offices, the historical society museum, city lake, and businesses along Oregon Street keep the city oriented around county work and regional errands. The local scoop is that Hiawatha combines an ordered street story, a very specific cemetery landmark, and a Halloween parade old enough to be part of the town's identity.
