About Hidalgo

Hidalgo is a city in Hidalgo County, Texas, situated on the Rio Grande across from the Mexican city of Reynosa. One of the southern termini of U.S. Highway 281 is located at the border crossing in Hidalgo, and the city of approximately 14,500 was first settled by Spanish colonists led by José de Escandón around 1749 under the name La Habitación. Public education is administered by the Hidalgo Independent School District and the Valley View Independent School District.
