High Falls, NY

High Falls grew around the old D&H Canal, and its remaining locks still give the Ulster County hamlet a visible shape across Marbletown and Rosendale. The canal carried anthracite coal from Pennsylvania to Kingston and the Hudson, linking this small inland stop to New York’s industrial growth. Five surviving locks make the Five Locks Walk a National Historic Landmark, and the D&H Canal Museum and Mid-Hudson Visitor Center occupy the 1797 DePuy Tavern on Main Street. Local businesses, restaurants, and residents helped form the High Falls Conservancy, which has worked on access to the falls and nearby park land. High Falls is Hudson Valley country with canal engineering underfoot and a waterfall at the center of town.
