Highland, AR

Highland is a Sharp County city on the ridge between Ash Flat, Hardy, and Cherokee Village. Its modern city story grew from school consolidation: after Ash Flat and Hardy combined their high-school programs in 1962, the new school was built midway between the two communities, and Highland incorporated in 1998. US 62/412 crosses the city, bringing restaurants, stores, and highway traffic along the same ridge where the school district built its campus. The city is also close to the northern edge of Cherokee Village.

Water gives Highland a second map. Lake Mirandy, June Lake, and Wild Plum Lake sit within the city, with a park beside Lake Mirandy for fishing, swimming, and local gatherings. Highland School District serves students from prekindergarten through 12th grade and also reaches nearby communities, while a full-time police department and volunteer fire department handle municipal basics. Highland is a young Arkansas city with an older rural setting: a school-centered origin, a highway corridor, three lakes, and the Sharp County landscape running around it. It came together through education and location, then filled in with homes, businesses, and city services along the ridge.
