Highland, UT

Highland gets its name quite literally from where it sits. Perched on an elevated bench at the mouth of American Fork Canyon, the city overlooks the northern end of Utah Valley with the Wasatch Range rising right in its backyard. While local stories often credit early Scottish immigrants with naming the town, early records show settlers simply referred to the area as the highland bench above American Fork and Lehi. That elevated geography gives today's neighborhoods incredible mountain views and easy access to recreation up the canyon.

The city grew differently than most of its neighbors. While many early Utah towns were laid out in compact, orderly grids, Highland started as spread-out homesteads and family farms along the foothills. That spacious layout carried forward into modern times. Even as subdivisions replaced older farmland, Highland maintained its open character with large single-family lots, equestrian properties, and quiet streets that comfortably blend suburban living with rural charm.

Highland remains primarily a residential community, which keeps neighborhood traffic light and surroundings peaceful. Rather than maintaining massive shopping plazas inside town lines, residents typically take a quick five-minute drive into neighboring Lehi, American Fork, or Cedar Hills for major grocery trips, big-box retail, and dining out. Local commercial activity centers mostly around City Hall, where you will find the city library, a popular summer splash pad, and a handful of convenient neighborhood businesses.

Community gatherings naturally center around the city's parks, trails, and seasonal events. Highland maintains around 18 miles of paved trails connecting neighborhood green spaces, along with popular spots like Highland Glen Park, known for its fishing pond, disc golf course, and shaded picnic areas. Every summer, residents turn out for the Highland Fling, an annual weeklong celebration packed with parades, sports tournaments, food trucks, and evening concerts that brings neighbors together from across the bench.
