About Highmore

Highmore is the county seat of Hyde County, South Dakota, with 682 residents at the 2020 census. A post office has operated here since 1882, and the city’s name refers to its lofty elevation on the central South Dakota plains. Hyde County was organized in the early 1880s, and Highmore became the place where county records, offices, and services were gathered. Its name turns a physical feature into a permanent local address on the plains.

The city’s county-seat role still shapes its daily map. Highmore’s schools, courthouse connections, local businesses, and roads serve a broad agricultural area, while the Missouri River lies about 40 miles away and Pierre is roughly 48 miles to the west. The Highmore Historical Society maintains the city’s first schoolhouse and preserves local Hyde County material. Highmore is a small prairie city, but its post office, courthouse history, schoolhouse, and county responsibilities give it a place well beyond the number of people who live within its limits.
