Hillsboro, MS

Hillsboro rises on a hill in Scott County, and its name says exactly how early residents placed it on the landscape. The community formed in 1835 and served as the county seat from 1836 to 1856. The county seat moved from Berryville to Hillsboro in 1836 after streets were laid out at the new site. The Argus once supplied a local newspaper, while the 1900 town held two churches and four stores. A post office still uses ZIP 39087, keeping Hillsboro's name on the county map even as Forest now serves as Scott County's seat.

School and county connections shape the present. Most of Hillsboro falls within the Forest Municipal School District, with a portion in the Scott County School District. East Central Community College's Forest/Scott County Career-Technical Center offers adult education and GED preparation at the Forest Career Advancement Center on South Main Street. Hillsboro is a named census-designated place with its own hilltop history, while Forest holds the county institutions and the regional career-technical center.
