Hillsborough has a distinct, private feel that sets it apart from neighboring Peninsula communities. Because the entire town is strictly residential, you will not find grocery stores, cafes, or commercial districts within its borders. Getting around usually means driving, since the winding, hilly streets rarely have sidewalks or wide shoulders. The upside is that neighborhoods stay remarkably peaceful and free from through-traffic, offering a quiet retreat just minutes from busier Peninsula hubs.

Campuses like North Hillsborough and Crocker Middle School serve as popular meeting spots for youth sports, community classes, and weekend recreation. The annual Memorial Day parade is a favorite local tradition, bringing neighbors together for music, food, and family activities on the school fields. You can also catch glimpses of the town's historic wealth in landmarks like Carolands Chateau, a massive 98-room French-style mansion that reflects the grand estate heritage that originally shaped the area.
