Hinsdale, NH

Hinsdale is the main village in the town of Hinsdale, set between the Connecticut River and the Ashuelot River in southwestern New Hampshire. The Ashuelot runs through the village's eastern and southern side, while Routes 119 and 63 point toward Brattleboro and Keene. Water and rail built the place: woolen and paper mills used the river, rail service reached the Ashuelot valley in 1850, and a 1912 spur connected Hinsdale with Brattleboro. The village formed around that industrial corridor, with Wantastiquet Mountain rising on the northern edge above the Connecticut River.

Today's village services sit inside that older geography. The Hinsdale Public Library on Brattleboro Road holds 20,000 volumes and hosts book clubs, reading programs, and children's activities; the town also links residents to a community center, school district, fire department, and the Moover Blue Line. The Ebenezer Hinsdale House, a 1759 property on 37 acres along the Connecticut, preserves the founder's farm, Fort Hinsdale site, barns, and blacksmith shop. The clapboard post office, continuously operating since 1815, remains another working piece of the historic village.
