About Hinton
Hinton is a Plymouth County city with a railroad-era start that is still easy to spot in its local history. The Illinois Central built the first railroad through the area in 1865, and Hinton's post office followed in 1881. The town was platted in 1883 by the Iowa Falls and Sioux City Town Lot and Land Company, while the name came from a settler who had lived in Hinton, West Virginia. A mill, early banks, newspapers, and a general-store telephone exchange filled out the town's early business map. Hinton is a small Iowa rail town whose name traveled west with a settler and whose first infrastructure arrived on steel.
