Hollister, CA

The Calaveras Fault crosses Hollister through residential streets, where steady fault creep bends curbs, shifts sidewalks, and cracks pavement without waiting for a large earthquake. U.S. Geological Survey field guides have measured movement in the Hollister area at roughly 7 to 10 millimeters per year. The trace is visible near Central Avenue and Locust Avenue and as a low rise through Dunne Park. Geology is part of ongoing city street maintenance and daily neighborhood observation across the street grid. Roads are repaired and surfaces replaced, yet the offsets reappear as the two sides continue to move. Beyond that unusual street-level feature, Hollister is the civic center of a county shaped by agriculture. The Diablo and Gabilan ranges frame the San Benito County landscape, with fields and ranchland approaching the city's developed edge.

The Rancho San Justo Homestead Association laid out 50 lots in 1868 on land that now includes downtown and named the settlement for Colonel William Welles Hollister. The city incorporated on March 26, 1872. It is the San Benito County seat. Its position in the northeastern Salinas Valley, between Gilroy and San Juan Bautista, still places downtown government, businesses, and services amid a broader working agricultural district. That county-seat role brings public offices and daily services into town. Industrial sites and the municipal airport form another set of workplaces. Hollister's 2040 General Plan, adopted in April 2026, directs future development toward the existing city and adjoining areas, calls for reinvestment in downtown, industrial parks, and the airport, and seeks to preserve agricultural land and open space around growth.

Those are planning priorities, not completed projects. Regional transportation also reflects Hollister's inland position. As of 2026, San Benito County Express operated local fixed-route and demand-response service and intercounty buses toward Gavilan College and Gilroy, where riders could connect with Caltrain and other regional services. The bus link extends the city's reach beyond the county even though no passenger rail line enters Hollister itself. San Benito Street remains the main setting for shared downtown events. The Hollister Downtown Association's 2026 calendar lists weekly Food Truck Tuesdays and a certified farmers' market, along with the June Saddle Horse Show parade and July street festival and car show.

Its 2026 market season began April 15. The market runs every Wednesday from 3 to 7 p.m. through October 21, creating a regular midweek use of the district beyond government and retail hours; its vendor list changes weekly. These gatherings use the same blocks that began as the homestead association's small town center, with county offices and locally operated businesses nearby. The farmers' market is especially tied to the surrounding landscape: its stalls bring produce and prepared food into the middle of the county seat during the growing season. A few blocks away, patched pavement and offset curbs mark the fault's path, so downtown life and the moving ground beneath Hollister remain visible within the same compact street grid.
