Holstein, IA

Holstein got its start in the late 1800s when German settlers and the railroad arrived in northwest Iowa. After settler Jochim Thode moved to the area, the town was established in 1882 and named after the region in northern Germany where many of the first residents had roots. Thanks to the new train line, Holstein quickly became a bustling hub for area farm families, packing its streets with shops, banks, doctors' offices, lumberyards, and even a roller rink.

Today, that community spirit is still easy to see. Restored storefronts line Main Street alongside great local amenities, including a performing arts center, a nine-hole golf course, and a popular city park and pool. The town's heritage is preserved at spots like the Stubbs Memorial Library mini-park, which features a replica of historic Turner Hall, while local schools and neighborhood events keep families connected. It is a welcoming Ida County community that combines small-town charm with plenty of everyday conveniences.
