Holtsville's best-known public site is in the middle of a civic transition. Brookhaven converted a landfill that closed in 1974 into the Holtsville Ecology Site, with greenhouses, environmental programs, a fitness-course trail, picnic facilities, gardens, compost distribution, and an animal refuge. The Town announced in late 2025 that the refuge's animals would move to approved sanctuaries by the end of the first quarter of 2026 as that part of the operation closed. The wider park remains active. Holtsville Pool's posted 2026 season runs from June 27 through September 7, and Food Truck Thursdays bring vendors to the park from July 16 through September 9. A July 2026 Town update also says officials are developing plans for a new spray park there. The result is not the disappearance of a public destination but a shift from a zoo-centered site toward recreation and community programming. Another practical resource lies just beyond the hamlet in Holbrook.

Sachem Public Library stays open until 9 p.m. on weekdays and operates a Studio with 3D printing, laser engraving, recording space, scanning, Cricut machines, and one-on-one project help. Its Library of Things lends tools, musical instruments, games, electronics, sewing machines, sports sets, and home equipment. Holtsville had 18,937 residents in the 2020 census. During 2020-2024, 86.5 percent of occupied homes were owner-occupied, and 93.1 percent of people age one or older had remained in the same home from the prior year. Median household income was $133,679, while workers averaged 32.9 minutes traveling to work.
