Homer Glen made outdoor darkness a municipal resource. The village adopted an outdoor-lighting ordinance in 2007 and, in 2011, became Illinois’s first International Dark Sky Community and the first designated east of the Mississippi River. That policy now has a public program attached to it: the village scheduled free telescope viewing at Heritage Park in May and October 2026, including a lower-stimulation sensory session. Heritage Park also functions in daylight as the community’s broadest recreation hub. Its Active Core has tennis and pickleball courts, sand volleyball, fitness stations, a challenge course, nature play, and a free 18-hole disc-golf course, while paths circle open lawns and a fishing pond. Work planned in 2026 extends the multiuse Hero’s Trail west from the park toward the existing Heatherwood segment. The village’s spacious pattern remains visible in its numbers. Population rose from 24,543 in 2020 to a 2025 estimate of 24,873 across 22.13 square miles.

During the 2020–2024 estimate period, owner occupancy was 94.9 percent and workers’ mean travel time was 35.8 minutes. Forest Preserve District land supplies a larger landscape around those homes. The 627-acre Messenger Marsh contains forest, savanna, and Spring Creek, with routes for hiking, bicycling, horseback riding, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing as well as fishing and a dog park; its entrance reopened in June 2026 after road replacement. Homer Township Public Library brings activity indoors through storytimes, crafts, yoga, adult games, book discussions, knitting groups, and a bookmobile. Food-truck gatherings and live events at Heritage Park add warm-season meeting points. Dark-sky rules, park programming, and preserve access are related parts of local life here: one protects the night overhead, while the others give residents places to use the village’s open land.
