About Homestead
Homestead is an Allegheny County borough on the Monongahela River, seven miles southeast of downtown Pittsburgh. The town grew on former farmland along the river, then became inseparable from Carnegie Steel and the Homestead Strike of 1892. The dispute between the Amalgamated Association of Iron and Steel Workers and Carnegie Steel became a major labor conflict, and the Homestead Historic District still carries that industrial history. The borough's map also faces Pittsburgh across the Monongahela, with the river serving as both its working edge and its clearest geographic marker.
