Hoopeston, IL

Hoopeston is a Vermilion County city at the meeting of Illinois Routes 1 and 9, about a mile from the county’s northern edge. The 2020 census counted 4,915 residents. The city was laid out in 1871 at the junction of two railroads and named for Thomas Hoopes, one of the men who offered land for the crossing. That rail-first origin shaped the street plan and the downtown economy: Main, Penn, and Market Streets were once the center of nearly everything, with Route 1 traffic funneled toward the business district. You can still read the town through that old railroad-and-highway arrangement.

Hoopeston Area Community Unit School District 11, Carle Hoopeston Regional Health Center, local employers, city services, and the downtown business blocks carry the everyday load now. The city’s current story is less about a vanished rail boom than about keeping a regional service town going for the surrounding farm country. Route 1 and Route 9 keep Hoopeston connected north and south, while the school, hospital, IGA, library, and local organizations give residents reasons to stay close to town. It is a compact eastern Illinois city with a very visible railroad skeleton and a practical, workaday center.
