Hopkinton, IA

Hopkinton is a Delaware County city along the Maquoketa River, laid out in 1850 and incorporated in 1874. The 2020 census counted 622 residents. Its most distinctive institution is Lenox College, which operated from 1859 until 1944 and left a cluster of buildings now maintained as the Delaware County Historical Museum. The old campus places a Civil War-era educational story inside the town's present-day street grid, a short distance from the river crossing and the city's civic center.

Hopkinton's daily map is built around the school district, parks, and local meeting places. Maquoketa Valley Community Schools houses first- and second-grade classes at Johnston Elementary, while Pool Side Park and Swimming Pool, Memorial Park, Dunlap Park, the library, and the community center provide recurring gathering spaces. The river valley links Hopkinton to the countryside south of Delaware County, and roads carry residents toward Manchester and other regional services. Hopkinton is a small city with an unusually visible educational past, where the old college campus and modern parks occupy the same compact community.
