Horine, MO

Horine is a Jefferson County census-designated place on the county’s eastern side, with Pevely to the northeast, Route Z to the northwest, and Joachim Creek along the southern edge. The 2020 census counted 657 residents. Joachim Creek flows toward the Mississippi River, and Dunklin R-V School District serves Horine along with nearby Herculaneum and Pevely. The local map is a mix of creek bottom, roads, homes, and the river towns that handle many regional services.

Horine was laid out in 1868 and named for C. Thomas Horine, an early settler, soldier, and lawyer. A post office called Horine Station had opened in 1862; the name changed to Horine in 1916, and the office closed in 1942. The Missouri Pacific Railroad helped establish the original station and townsite, leaving Horine with a transportation history that predates the current road network. Today Route Z and county roads carry the daily movement, while Pevely and Herculaneum mark the nearby developed edge of Jefferson County.
