Horton, KS

Horton was founded in 1886 in Brown County, where the arrival of the railroad turned a new town into a regional point on the map. The Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific route ran through Horton and connected it with lines toward Topeka, Herington, and the Nebraska border. Rail companies used towns like this to move settlers, crops, freight, and workers, and Horton grew in that railroad landscape. The city was named for Albert H. Horton.

That history still helps account for Horton's scale and layout, even as the town's daily life has shifted toward schools, farms, highways, and county services. South Brown County USD 430 is based in Horton and operates the local high school, giving the city a school-centered role for nearby communities. The Kickapoo Tribe in Kansas also has its land office in Horton, adding a regional institutional presence beyond the city limits. Hiawatha and other Brown County towns extend the choices for shopping and services, but Horton remains a place with a railroad-shaped past and a practical small-city present.
