About Houston Acres
Houston Acres is one of those Louisville-area places that feels like a neighborhood until you check the municipal line. The east-central Jefferson County city covers a compact 0.14 square miles, sits next to Louisville on its west side, and is bordered elsewhere by consolidated Louisville-Jefferson County and Cambridge. Downtown Louisville is about eight miles away. Houston Acres has its own commission government even though the larger service connections point toward the metro around it.
The city was incorporated on October 3, 1956, and remained a separate local government after the 2003 Louisville-Jefferson County merger. That is the useful Houston Acres detail: the city is a pocket of homes with its own boundary, commission, and ordinances inside a much larger urban map. There is no big downtown story here, and that is part of the point. Houston Acres is a small municipal island whose identity lives in the line on the map and the people who keep its city government running.
