About Howell

Howell sits in Box Elder County’s Blue Creek Valley, between the Promontory Mountains and the northeast end of the Great Salt Lake. The valley runs north and south between the Promontory ranges, West Hills, and Blue Spring Hills, with Interstate 84 just north of town. Blue Creek Spring lies nearby, and the valley’s early settlement grew around water, a railroad construction camp, and later farmsteads. That settlement had a school, store, post office, gas station, dance hall, and church before it was abandoned in the early twentieth century.

Howell is the community that remains in the valley. The town’s current civic map includes a community center, library, schools, medical facilities, worship sites, and a cemetery. A weather station sits at nearby Thiokol Airport, where the surrounding climate brings cold winters, warm-to-hot summers, and large swings between day and night. The result is a small Box Elder town with a visible connection to the old Blue Creek settlement, the I-84 corridor, and the mountain ranges that hold the valley in place.
