Hoyt Lakes, MN

Hoyt Lakes is a planned Saint Louis County city on Minnesota’s Iron Range, laid out in the 1950s around the Erie Mining Company’s taconite operation. The mine and plant came online in the 1950s, and the city was built to house workers, mine staff, teachers, and businesses rather than grow from an older crossroads. That planned origin still shows in the way homes, schools, lakes, and roads fit together. Colby Lake and Whitewater Lake give the city its everyday geography, while County Highway 110 is the main route through town.

The taconite works closed in 2008, but Hoyt Lakes did not disappear with the mine. The old Iron Range pattern is still easy to see: a company-built town, a generation of work tied to ore, and a community that has kept going after the plant shut down. Trails, lakes, and access toward the Superior National Forest now share the map with former industrial ground. Hoyt Lakes is a place where the mining past is not background scenery—it is the reason the city exists, and the starting point for understanding what comes next.
