Hubbell, MI

Hubbell is an unincorporated community and census-designated place on the west shore of Torch Lake in Houghton County, split between Torch Lake and Osceola townships. M-26 runs along the lake and ties the community to Lake Linden, while Torch Lake Township Hall and the Hubbell Community Center sit at the town's main civic address on Duncan Avenue. Hubbell is the township's population center, and the water, road, and township offices meet in the same small stretch of the Copper Country. The community carries the name of Jay A. Hubbell, a former Houghton County prosecutor, congressman, state senator, and judge whose career is part of the Keweenaw's nineteenth-century political history.

Mining and transportation remain the strongest historical threads. The Calumet & Hecla company used a narrow-gauge industrial locomotive around the mills and smelters of Lake Linden and Hubbell to move copper concentrate, coal, and other materials. A preserved example at the Houghton County Historical Society in nearby Lake Linden keeps that industrial route visible. Hubbell's present-day map is easy to picture in concrete terms: Torch Lake at the edge, M-26 through the center, township services in the community center, and the old copper-processing corridor continuing into Lake Linden.
