About Hunnewell

Hunnewell is an incorporated city in Sumner County, Kansas. The 2020 Census counted 44 residents. Founded in 1880 along a railroad, the town became a shipping point for Texas cattle. The Kansas Historical Society records thousands of cattle moving to Hunnewell stockyards in the early 1890s, with a Santa Fe branch ending there and the Frisco extending south from South Haven. The railroad connected Hunnewell with Kansas City stockyards through the Leavenworth, Lawrence and Galveston line. South Haven USD 509 now serves the rural district from its school in South Haven. Hunnewell’s small footprint sits on a former rail-and-cattle corridor.
