Hunter, TN

At the 2020 census, Hunter was a Carter County census-designated place of 1,803 people along Tennessee Route 91 and the Watauga River, northeast of Elizabethton. The river marks its southern edge and Holston Mountain rises to the north, so the community’s map is easy to read: water below, mountain above, roads and homes in between. It sits in the Johnson City–Kingsport–Bristol region, but the local name is Stoney Creek in everyday county-school and community references.

Schools in Hunter/Stoney Creek are part of Carter County Schools, whose system follows the county’s small communities from Butler and Hampton to Roan Mountain and Valley Forge. The Elizabethton campus of Northeast State Community College is nearby, adding a practical education link to the river corridor.
