Idylwood, VA

Interstate 66 divides Idylwood’s housing landscape as clearly as it divides the map. North of the highway, development associated with nearby Tysons includes apartments, townhouses, small-lot houses, and the high-rise Idylwood Towers; south of I-66, large-lot detached houses remain more common. Both sections grew from an earlier crossroads and railroad landscape. Settlement first followed the Washington and Old Dominion Railroad corridor and later Route 7, while the Capital Beltway, I-66, and Metrorail helped turn surrounding Fairfax County into a major employment center. The 2020 census counted 17,954 residents in Idylwood, or about 6,410 people per square mile. For the 2020–2024 period, Census estimates put the foreign-born share at 38.4 percent and found that 47.6 percent of people age five and older spoke a language other than English at home. Rather than one central commercial district, Idylwood’s practical connections run along the roads and transit routes at its edges.

Route 7 forms much of the north side, U.S. 29 marks the south, and the Beltway lies to the west. Fairfax Connector Route 703 links Idylwood Towers with West Falls Church and McLean Metrorail stations, giving the northern part of the community a scheduled bus connection to both rail lines and to Tysons. County parks supply the main public recreation spaces. Idylwood Park includes baseball and soccer fields, tennis and basketball courts, handball courts, a playground, open lawn, and short walking and bicycling trails. On the southeast side, Jefferson District Park combines a nine-hole executive golf course and miniature golf with eight lighted tennis courts, basketball courts, picnic areas, and a playground. George C. Marshall High School adds a major public campus along Leesburg Pike.
