Indian Creek, IL

Indian Creek is a tiny Lake County village in Vernon Township, tucked into the Chicago metropolitan area beside Vernon Hills. The 2020 census counted 536 residents, and the village has the smallest area of any incorporated place in the county. It was created in 1958 when residents moved to protect their pocket of land from possible annexation by Vernon Hills. Attorney Harold P. Block helped carry out what became known as a paper incorporation, a legal move that sounds temporary but gave Indian Creek its own municipal identity. The arrangement is still visible in the way the place works.

Indian Creek relies on the Lake County Sheriff for police service and the Countryside Fire Protection District for fire and emergency response, while county roads, nearby shopping, and the larger school-and-work network fill in what the village itself does not provide. There is no broad commercial center to define it; the local story is about a small residential enclave holding its boundary in the middle of a fast-growing suburban region. Indian Creek is the kind of place you can pass without noticing, then realize it has been deliberately keeping its own name and government for nearly seven decades.
