About Indian Trail

Indian Trail takes its name from a trading route that ran from Petersburg, Virginia, toward the Waxhaw people and regional gold-mining areas. Founded in 1861 as a farming community, it drew German, Scots-Irish, and Irish settlers. The railroad between Charlotte and Monroe reached the area in 1874, and when Indian Trail incorporated in 1907, its limits formed a half-mile circle around the intersection of Indian Trail Road and the Seaboard Railroad. That historic crossroads is now a Union County suburb about 10 miles southeast of Charlotte in North Carolina’s Piedmont. The population increased from 1,942 in 1990 to 39,997 in 2020.
