Inglis, FL

Inglis is a Levy County town a few miles inland from the Gulf, with the Withlacoochee River and the Cross Florida Greenway shaping its edges. The 2020 census counted 1,476 residents. The town was named for Captain John L. Inglis, a Scottish American who brought a boat from Spain to the mouth of the Withlacoochee for trade. That gives Inglis a maritime backstory even though this is a small inland town.

The river remains the through-line. Inglis has put attention on preserving its wooded areas and riverfront, while the nearby Inglis Bypass follows part of the failed Cross Florida Barge Canal project. The bypass was built to divert water from the Withlacoochee and includes a spillway and walkway. Inglis is also tied to a bit of movie lore: Elvis Presley spent part of 1961 filming Follow That Dream in town and the surrounding area. Between the river, canal works, and a film crew, Inglis has more layers than its road sign suggests.
