Inverness, MS

In the Mississippi Delta, Inverness sits in Sunflower County about 90 miles north of Jackson. Cotton once made the town a regional gathering point: farmers brought their harvest to what was described as the largest cotton gin in the Delta. The 2020 census counted 868 residents. The town's streets and fields sit in the flat farm country that gives the Delta its scale, where a small place can serve a wide agricultural area.

On February 21, 1971, an F5 tornado struck directly, destroying broad sections including homes and the cotton gin; 21 people in Inverness died. It destroyed roughly 90 percent of the business district and damaged about three-quarters of the homes, with 153 homes destroyed and 61 businesses affected. The town rebuilt, and the storm's memory remains part of the place. Today Sunflower County Consolidated School District serves residents, with students zoned to schools in Moorhead. The old cotton economy, tornado memory, and Delta landscape all sit alongside a small town with a large story. The tornado is part of Inverness's story, but it is not the whole town.
