About Lexington
Lexington is the county seat and most populous town in Lexington County, just west of Columbia. Its roots go back to 1735, when South Carolina's colonial government created backcountry townships to encourage settlement and defense. Today Lexington is a fast-growing Midlands community with county government, schools, shopping, and neighborhoods spreading toward Lake Murray and Columbia. The Lexington County Museum adds a local history presence, while the town's growth reflects its role as both a courthouse town and a desirable Columbia-area suburb.
