Iron Horse, CA

Iron Horse is a Plumas County census-designated place in northeastern California’s Sierra country, at roughly 4,900 feet near Portola and Lake Davis. The community sits among high-elevation forest, meadows, mountain roads, and scattered homes without a traditional village center. Portola is the nearest incorporated town and regional service point, while the wider county stretches from the Sierra Valley to Lake Almanor, Quincy, Greenville, and the Plumas National Forest.

Outdoor geography does most of the local organizing. Lake Davis and nearby forest roads support fishing, camping, hiking, and winter travel, while the county’s long distances shape school, shopping, and medical trips. Plumas Unified School District serves the county’s four principal communities through a wide rural network of schools and alternative sites, so education is organized at a scale larger than Iron Horse itself. The place is best understood as a mountain residential community tied to Portola and the county road system.
